Perhaps the most important aspect of looking beautiful on your wedding day is understanding that a gown that fits well and is appropriate for your figure type is more important than beading and glitz. Brides need to understand that a well-made and well-fit gown can help hide most figure flaws. With that in mind here are a few tips for finding a wedding gown to best flatter your body type:
- Arms – one of my brides’ biggest complaints. However, many brides assume that adding a sleeve will hide their arms-- not true. In many fabrics, such as satin, a sleeve will only highlight the area. Be open to trying sleeveless or off-the-shoulder gowns. By bringing the eye to another area, such as the neckline, the arms can be cleverly diminished.
- Bust –For fuller busts, I recommend open necklines such as V or scoops. A gown with a narrow waistline and only a semi-full skirt will proportionally flatter the busty bride. Stay away from empire and full ballgowns. For smaller busted girls, classic high necklines such as jewel and bateau are appropriate but not mandatory. Smaller girls can wear almost any style with the help of a little padding!
- Petite -- While petite girls seem to gravitate toward sheath gowns and slip dresses, an a-line gown is really best as it lengthens the body. If you really have your heart set on a sheath, look for one with some structure and details.
- Large Hips – Fuller a-line gowns and ballskirts can hide numerous areas. Look for these gowns that have details such as beading and lace around the neckline to draw the eye upward. Also, drop waisted gowns elongate the torso and minimize the hips.
Good luck! Enjoy this special time of your life and if you have any questions at all, please email me at askpaula@paulavarsalona.com.
